Athlone Film Club to show American Fiction tonight

Athlone Film Club returns with a showing of American Fiction at the Dean Crowe Theatre tonight (Tuesday), January 14.

Doors open at the Dean Crowe Theatre in Athlone at 7.30pm and the film starts at 8pm. The running time of the film is 117 minutes and entry is €10, cash only please.

The main character in the film is Monk (played by Jeffrey Wright), a respected novelist and English literature professor. However when his latest book fails to attract publishers because it is not “Black enough”, the frustrated writer pens a new novel under a pseudonym, whose story includes every Black stereotype he can think of!

But the plan backfires when the book is immediately snapped up by a major publisher, and Monk finds that he has unintentionally created a literary success by trading on the very cultural stereotypes he despises.

Nominated for five Oscars including Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut is a smart and hilarious satire, which has proved to be a firm favourite with audiences.

The film won the 'People’s Choice Award' at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.

"Jeffrey Wright gives a knock-out performance in this edgy, Oscar-nominated comedy," - The Irish Times.

"American Fiction is a wonderfully tart comic drama and Wright is marvellous as its grumpy anti-hero," - The Irish Independent.
