Funeral to take place of well-known former Athlone publican

A prominent former Athlone publican is being laid to rest tomorrow (Wednesday).

Joe Higgins, Barrybeg, Athlone, and formerly of Riverstown, Co. Sligo, was the proprietor of the former Higgins Bar in Pearse St, Athlone, for many years.

Joe passed away peacefully on Monday, surrounded by his family in the tender care of the staff Roscommon Hospice.

He is predeceasesd by his parents James and Margaret, and his sisters Maureen and Breda.

His passing is deeply regretted by his loving wife Rita, son Paul, daughter Karen, son in law Conor, daughter in law Jacqueline, grandchildren Oisín, Rachel, Ciarán and Eoin, brothers in law, sister in law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Reposing on Tuesday evening at the Strand Funeral Home from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Mass of the resurrection on Wednesday at 11am, in The Church of the Risen Christ, Ballybay, followed by burial in Kiltoom cemetery
