Athlone juniors shine at Provinces Indoor Rowing Championships
The atmosphere was electric as clubs from all over the country converged on the sports arena in the University of Limerick for the annual Provinces Indoor Rowing Championship on Saturday, November 23.
The event gave athletes an opportunity to test themselves and their fitness in the lead up to the Irish Indoor Championship next January.
Despite Storm Bert delaying the start, the competition got underway with the Junior 13 age group.
A series of impressive performances resulted in Athlone's Muireann Kenny taking first place in the 3-minute timed piece with Laoise Claffey taking third place.
Sophie Reynolds of Athlone Boat Club competed in the Junior 15 5-minute timed piece and clinched the top spot.
Sarah Rockett was up in the Junior 16 2-kilometre race and executed an excellent race which saw her take first place, with competitors from Garda Boat Club and Waterford Boat Club taking second and third place respectively.
Victory came again for the Junior 13 girls in the 500m race. This time Felicity Heaslip led the charge home with Muireann Kenny taking third place.
Athlone Boat Club's final podium finish came with masters rower Alan Kenny clinching third place in the 2000m race.
Congratulations to the remainder of the club who competed and performed exceptionally well particularly to those who competed in an indoors championship for the first time.
Well done to Alice Doran, Bella Goode, Harry Doran, Mikey Goode and Frankie Sheehan and Andrea Doran and to the parents and coaches who travelled on the day.
