Moore beat Boyle in thrilling top of the table clash

In a top of the table clash in the Roscommon and District League Premier Division, Moore United travelled to fellow challengers Boyle Celtic and came away with a valuable 4-3 win following a thrilling game last weekend.

Adam Dwyer gave the home side an early lead and they were still in front at half-time. However, the second half changed all that and Moore were a much-improved side. Following a Jason Ryan delivery, Rian Carpenter levelled the game when the Boyle keeper was unable to hold his header. Boyle restored their lead with Michael Corrigan making it 2-1 almost instantly.

Moore introduced Eoin O’Connell on the left and he stretched the home defence, while Brian Sheerin was rock solid at left-full. Euan Kelly, Sean Finneran and the returning Emmet Kenny all made a difference when introduced from the bench.

Carpenter's second goal, another header, made it 2-2, before goals from Charles Nevin and Jay McPhilbin put Moore 4-2 ahead. Despite an own goal bringing Boyle back into the game, Moore held out to take all three points.

The game had a tense finish with Rory Ryan putting in an outstanding challenge on the Boyle striker. It was a case of game management with Charles Nevin giving a masterclass on how to run down the clock, in what was an all-around strong performance from the visitors.

St John’s Athletic kept their title hopes on track when they beat CP Ajax 4-1 at Lecarrow. The ever-reliable Jamie Tiernan gave them a 1-0 half-time lead. Simon Leonard volleyed a good second and Ryan Dowling added a third before the Castleplunket side pulled a goal back from the penalty spot through Gerry Ward. Ryan Dowling made it 4-1 for the Lecarrow side near the end.

In Division 1, Dunmore Town had an impressive 3-1 away win over Skyvalley Rovers. Dunmore took the lead after five minutes when a Shane McGrath cross was finished by Daniel Burke. Padraig Costello made it 2-0 after 15 minutes with a close range shot.

Rovers were back in the game with 25 minutes played. A David Grehan free kick was parried by the Dunmore keeper and Eoin Keogh finished to leave the score 1-2 at half-time.

Skyvalley had some good chances to level the game in the second half including a penalty kick but couldn’t score. Near the end of the game and against the run of play, a long range volley by Dunmore’s Dylan Fallon deceived the home keeper to secure the three points for the Galway outfit.

Ballinasloe Town are two points clear at the top of the Division 1 table with Moylough in second place. Skyvalley Rovers are four behind but have a game less played.

Ballinasloe beat Cloonfad United 3-1 at Ballinasloe. The game was even enough until Simon Leonard scored for the home side with 38 minutes played. Mooney Founas and Pedro Girmalau added two more for the winners, with Andy Glennon pulling a goal back for the losers near the end.

Moylough travelled to Ahascragh and came away with a 3-0 win. Ian Fahy gave Moylough a 1-0 lead early in the second half and shortly afterwards he volleyed a superb second. Dermot Hughes sealed the win when he got a third for the winners.

In Division 2, Cam Celtic/Dysart beat Moore United 2-1 at Dysart. Gareth Mulligan scored both goals for the winners.

Kilkerrin Utd beat Cloonfad United 7-2 at Cloonfad. Oisin Hynes scored two, with Daniel Stephens, Luke Walsh, Enda Keane, Sean Collins and Evan Fahy adding one each for the winners. Jack Reinhardt and Dan Fagan scored for the losers.

In the Women’s League, Boyle Celtic beat Ballinasloe Town 4-1 at Ballinasloe. Annie O’Connor, Emer Callaghan, Sarah Lee and Andrea Hogan scored for Boyle, with Patrice Fallon scoring for Ballinasloe. The remaining games were victims of the bad weather.
