Colin Fortune announced as new manager of Athlone Town women's team
Colin Fortune has been announced as the new manager of the Athlone Town women’s team.
An Athlone native who previously had spells as a player and manager of the men's team, Fortune has considerable experience in football.
As well as having represented Athlone, Colin also played for Kildare County, Dundalk, and Galway United, and captained the Republic of Ireland Military Team at the World Military Games.
Speaking about his appointment, he told athlonetownafc.ie that he was "honoured" to take charge of the Athlone Town senior women's team, the current league champions.
"It's great to be back in Elite football and with the opportunity to lead a team at the highest level of competition in Irish football and on the European stage in the Champions League," he stated.
Having memorably led Athlone to their first ever Women’s Premier Division title, Ciarán Kilduff stepped down as manager after the heavy defeat to Shelbourne in the Women’s FAI Cup final on October 20.
Kilduff’s departure was confirmed on the night of the cup decider and he has since taken charge of the Dundalk men’s team, with the Louth club trying to recover from their major financial troubles.
