Burke encourages Midlands youth to 'DREAMBIG'
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Peter Burke has praised the DREAMBIG programme for investing in attracting young talent in the Midlands to the manufacturing sector.
The DREAMBIG programme, led by the Advanced Technologies in Manufacturing (AITM) Cluster organisation, has expanded to all four Midlands counties in 2024, engaging 91 young people in a dynamic, hands-on introduction to careers in advanced manufacturing.
This innovative initiative connects students with opportunities in their local region, addressing the challenge of talent attraction in the manufacturing sector by fostering collaboration between industry, local government, educators, and the community.
Over the course of last week, students visited multiple manufacturing sites from a pool of 15 leading ATIM Cluster member companies. They gained insights into the cutting-edge technologies and products being developed in the Midlands while participating in engaging workshops in digitalisation, robotics, engineering, advanced manufacturing, and materials.
Each afternoon, students also took part in hands-on activities, further enriching their understanding of the skills and innovation involved in the sector. More than 120 staff from the participating companies were actively involved in delivering this immersive experience.
Minister Burke, who attended the programme’s closing event, emphasised the value of investing in the region’s future workforce,
“For Ireland’s manufacturing base to remain competitive, especially here in the Midlands, we need to equip our young people with the skills and confidence to pursue careers in advanced manufacturing. The DREAMBIG programme is a shining example of what can be achieved when industry, local government and education come together to create opportunities for our youth.
Simon Walton, representing the Midlands local authorities, echoed the Minister’s sentiment, highlighting the collaborative effort behind DREAMBIG.
He said: “This programme demonstrates the power of regional partnerships. By working together, we’re not just showcasing career opportunities but actively investing in the sustainability and competitiveness of our local economy. DREAMBIG is a testament to what can be achieved when stakeholders unite with a shared vision.”
ATIM Cluster Manager Caitríona Mordan, the driving force behind DREAMBIG, described the programme’s unique impact.
“This is more than a career exploration initiative—it’s about creating an ecosystem where industry, government, educators, and the community collaborate to support young people. DREAMBIG allows students to see first-hand that they can thrive in exciting, innovative careers without needing to leave their region. This benefits not just the students but ensures companies and the Midlands region remain competitive and prosperous.”
Ashleigh Doyle, an industry partner who hosted students during the programme, added: “It was inspiring to see how enthusiastic the students were.
“They came curious and left inspired, with a better understanding of what a career in manufacturing could look like. Programmes like this are essential for shaping the next generation of talent in our sector.”
For the students, the experience has been equally rewarding. A participant from the programme shared: “I had no idea there were so many amazing companies right here in the Midlands. DREAMBIG was an outstanding opportunity to see cutting-edge manufacturing up close. I feel inspired to know that you don’t need to go far to dream big—the opportunities are right here.”
Through the ATIM Cluster’s leadership, DREAMBIG showcases the power of collaboration across the Midlands. This programme serves as a model for attracting talent to the manufacturing sector and ensuring that young people in the Midlands see the possibilities and potential of a career in high-tech manufacturing - right here at home.
