Meet the candidates: Louise Heavin, Independent (Longford Westmeath)
Here is our Q&A with Mount Temple native and Athlone resident Louise Heavin. She served as a county councillor in Westmeath from 2019 to 2024, and is running in the general election as an Independent, having previously represented the Green Party.
Why did you decide to run for the Dáil?
I got involved in politics in 2015 or 2016, after relocating back to Ireland and living in rental accommodation in Dublin. Housing was a huge issue for me back then and it still is now. People simply cannot afford a reasonably-priced place to live. The housing crisis needs to be sorted, and I believe that my skills and knowledge will be really valuable.
What one issue would be your top priority if you are elected?
I do believe that housing would be my top priority in the Dáil. The lack of housing affects all areas of society and creates division in society as well. We need a strong voice in this region to represent the Midlands in terms of the housing crisis.
Other issues are healthcare, a lack of school places in our communities, and a lack of public services in the Midlands. If I am elected, I will be a strong voice for the Midlands on these issues.
Do Independents have any real power to enact change in the Dáil?
I believe independent TDs absolutely have power in the Dáil! I would work with whichever party is in Government for my constituency.
We also need Independent voices to hold the Government to account. There absolutely is a place for Independents, and I think the Independent voice needs to be more valued – they are not influenced by party whips or lobby groups.
Do you feel you have more freedom running as an Independent rather than as a Green Party candidate?
Yes. I’m able to write my own manifesto and campaign on what matters to me. Being a member of the Green Party, I think people misunderstood why I went into politics.
How do you assess your chances of being elected?
Good! The people on doors have been looking for a strong, progressive Independent who will be constructive. There has been a lot of positivity from people.
