Over 16,300 children in Westmeath now receiving free schoolbooks – Burke

The value of education cannot be overstated, according to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, Peter Burke TD, as he welcomed news that some 16,333 children in Westmeath are now entitled to free schoolbooks.

The free schoolbook scheme was first rolled out to primary school students in 2023, with 11,551 pupils now availing of it in Westmeath. It was expanded to Junior Cycle students for the academic year beginning this September, bringing a further 4,782 children under the scheme locally.

“The free schoolbook scheme, launched by this Government and funded with around €150m since 2023, is one of the most progressive educational initiatives ever introduced by the State,” commented Minister Burke.

“It’s great to see over 16,000 children in Westmeath benefiting from the scheme, and I’m delighted with the financial relief it’s providing to thousands of parents across the county.

“Education cannot be understated in its importance. It’s a powerful tool that creates equal opportunities for all and contributes to long-term economic growth.”

Minister Burke also highlighted the Government’s commitment to education through local investments in schools and facilities.

Projects are currently underway at St Mary’s Special School (on site) and St Finian’s College (on site) in Mullingar, St Joseph’s Secondary School in Rochfortbridge (detailed design), Castlepollard Vocational School (detailed design), Moate Community School (detailed design), and Marist College in Athlone (Pre-Stage 1).

“These new projects will provide much-needed facilities to communities across Westmeath for years to come,” said Minister Burke.

“They include renovations and new buildings, the development of gymnasiums, art classrooms, science labs, libraries, and more, which will enhance the quality of education delivered locally.

“This adds to several significant projects already completed in Westmeath, such as the new Holy Family Primary School, Gaelscoil Choillín, and Saplings Special School in Mullingar.”
