Athlone Town fans celebrating at the final whistle in Wexford this afternoon (Monday).

Athlone Town march on to First Division playoff final

Athlone Town are one step closer to a possible return to the Premier Division of the SSE Airtricity League after defeating Wexford FC over two legs in the First Division playoff semi-final.

Having led 1-0 after Thursday's opening leg in Lissywollen, the Town travelled to Ferrycarrig Park this afternoon (Monday) and put in a battling display to emerge with a 0-0 draw on the day.

In front of a capacity crowd, Wexford had their chances in the game - including a header by Divin Ishamala which grazed the outside of the post in the dying stages of injury time - but Athlone stood firm much to the delight of their travelling support.

The result means that Athlone Town will now face either Bray Wanderers or UCD in the First Division playoff final, will take place in Dalymount Park at 4pm this Saturday, November 2.

The First Division playoff final is a one-off game, and the winner of it will then play Drogheda United in another one-off game, the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division Promotion / Relegation Play-Off, at 2pm on Saturday, November 16.

The play-off on November 16 will be broadcast live on Virgin Media Two.
