Westmeath Senior Hurling Final abandoned
The Westmeath Senior Hurling Final between Castletown Geoghegan and Lough Lene Gaels was abandoned after just 13 minutes at TEG Cusack Park this afternoon, as heavy rain left the pitch in an unplayable state.
Vastly experienced referee Barry Kelly, who has officiated at four All-Ireland hurling finals, consulted both managers and spoke with GAA officials before confirming his decision to halt proceedings in the worsening weather conditions. Lough Lene Gaels were leading by 0-2 to no score at the time.
Westmeath GAA chairman and secretary, Frank Mescall and Brendan Shaw, spoke with the match referee on the sideline before it was confirmed that he was abandoning the game.
The 3.30pm start meant that fading light could also have been a factor on such a dull afternoon, as winter time officially began last night.
It was announced that the game was abandoned due to safety concerns, and it has been confirmed that the county final will take place next Saturday, November 2, at TEG Cusack Park (2pm).
Torrential rain left its mark on a playing surface which was cutting up badly. The minor final between Clonkill and Raharney was played as the curtain-raiser, and Clonkill were the victors by two points.
Both managers were disappointed that the game was called off, but they respected the decision of the referee. Lough Lene Gaels manager Joey Williams was critical of the decision to proceed with the minor final, which contributed to a poor playing surface for the county's hurling showpiece.
Frank Mescall said the best call was made given the inclement weather, but he had sympathy for all the players involved.
"It was not and easy decision, but we back our referees 100%. I would apologise to the players because it's extremely unfortunate. However, we don't control the skies," he said.
The intermediate football final replay between Milltown and Garrycastle has been switched from TEG Cusack Park tomorrow afternoon. It will take place at Lakepoint Park, St Loman's GAA grounds, Mullingar at 2pm.
