Player of the Month award for another Athlone Town player
Roisin Molloy has capped off a memorable SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division season by winning the Player of the Month award for October.
The Sligo native featured in all 20 games as she helped Athlone claim their first League title with the Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup final still to come against Shelbourne at Tallaght Stadium this Sunday.
According to statistics provided by the League of Ireland, Molloy finished the season second in key passes (16), third in progressive runs (60), fourth in expected assists (4.35), seventh in shots on goal (43) and 11th in crosses (48).
The 22-year-old contributed five league goals but it was her overall play across the midfield and forward positions that made her stand out by creating space, linking defence with attack and consistently producing noteworthy performances.
Molloy becomes the third Athlone player to win this monthly prize this season following on from Casey Howe (April), who has since moved to Nottingham Forest, and Madison Gibson (September), while club-mate Jesi Rossman was also nominated this month.
The voting favoured Molloy over Treaty United forward Danielle Steer – who finished the season with eight goals – and Shelbourne’s ever-dependable Maggie Pierce.
