Caravan destroyed by fire in Marine View area of Athlone

A caravan was destroyed in a fire in Athlone late last night (Wednesday).

Athlone Fire Brigade said they were called out to the fire in Marine View, Montree, at 10:33 pm.

While the caravan “was burned out”, nobody was injured in the incident as the vehicle was empty.

We previously reported that no other property was damaged in the incident, but have since learned that a nearby residential property was impacted, and two people received hospital treatment related to smoke inhalation.

The fire brigade were back in the station by 11:25 pm, having brought the fire under control.

Athlone Station Manager Ray McLoughlin said it was unclear to whom the caravan belonged at this time.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is being carried out by An Garda Siochana.
