Moate choir has raised €12k for charities in first year

An Cór Lár Tíre, a community choir from Moate, has donated over €12,000 to local charities in its first year.

The choir was established by Moate Community School (MCS) music teacher Giselle Foley and Oisín Johnston in September of last year, and has since become a social beacon throughout the Midlands, with members of all ages coming together to rehearse and perform.

In May of this year, An Cór Lár Tíre took to the stage in Moate Community School for their performance of 'Songs in Summer' in front of a sold out crowd.

The community choir delighted those in attendance with a wide range of well known songs from Coldplay, Toto and the world renowned musical, Les Misérables.

In total, 'Songs in Summer' raised a total of €6,000 for worthy local charities Athlone Meals on Wheels, Esker House Women's refuge and The Tony Parker Foundation. The charities were presented with the donated funds at a recent rehearsal in Moate.

Speaking about the choirs success, Director Giselle Foley noted her pride in the choirs charitable contributions to date.

She said: "None of it would be possible without the support of the local community.”

An Cór Lár Tíre choir was also among the performers at the Féile na Sionnaine festival in Athlone earlier this month.

The choir's committee is currently preparing to return to rehearsals.
