Retail blow for Athlone as long-established Behan's Fruit and Veg to close

Athlone will see the loss of another of its long-established businesses with the news that Behan's Fruit and Veg is to close in the coming weeks.

In a post on Facebook this evening (Tuesday), the Behan family said they had made the "emotional and difficult" decision to close permanently on Saturday, August 31.

Sharon Behan said ongoing changes to the "shopping culture" in recent years had been a factor in the decision.

"It's with great sadness that we have to announce the closure of Behans Fruit and Veg," read the business' post.

"For our family this has been a very hard decision to make. Phil finally has decided it's time to retire from the business he and Betty built, back 36 years ago.

"Unfortunately, I, Sharon, won't be continuing with the business. It has been an emotional and difficult decision, but I believe the whole shopping culture has changed rapidly over the last few years and will continue to change.

"We would like to thank all our fantastic staff over the years that has made work so enjoyable.

"Lastly and most importantly thank you to all our customers. We certainly can say we have made friends for life.

"We will open our doors for the last time on Saturday 31st August so please do stop by," concluded the message, which was signed by Philip, Betty and Sharon Behan.

Behan's is based at Scotch Parade in Athlone, and has long been renowned for its produce and customer service.

The loss of another prominent business long associated with Athlone will be regretted by many locals.
