Further traffic closures announced on Athlone roads

A riverside street in Athlone will be closed to traffic for the next six months as a result of work being carried out as part of the town's €114 million Main Drainage Project.

The traffic closure at The Quay, which runs alongside the Shannon, to the rear of Athlone Castle and Sean's Bar, was advertised by Westmeath County Council last week and is due to run from Friday, July 26, until February 1, 2025.

In addition, the local authority gave details of upcoming road closures in the Carrickobrien area of Golden Island.

The L-8006 local road in Carrickobrien is due to close from Tuesday next, August 6, until Friday, September 6, and in tandem with this another local road in the area, L-5413, is also scheduled to be closed to traffic from August 19 until September 6.

These closures, too, are due to the Athlone Main Drainage Project, which is a large-scale overhaul of the town's wastewater system and is due to continue until the end of next year.

Westmeath County Council said diversions that will be in effect during the closures would be signposted.
