Athlone mourns passing of Eugene Davis

The death has been announced of Eugene 'Pooch' Davis, a key figure in Athlone Town's glory days of the late 70s and early 80s.

'Pooch' played in both legs of the famous UEFA Cup clash with AC Milan and was leading goalscorer when Athlone won the league in 1980/81 for the first time.

In a tribute this morning, Athlone Town said it was "extremely saddened" to hear of his passing.

"Eugene's name will forever live in the the annals of our Club and his exploits on the pitch are remembered by many supporters when ever the history of the club is spoken about."

The club went on to outline how the Dublin native joined the club at the start of the 74/75 season and went on to score 49 league goals during the next six seasons, including 23 goals in the 1980/81 season.

Funeral details have not yet been released.

He is survived by his children Gina, Trevor, Barry, Eugene and Gavin and predeceased by his wife, Marianne.

Athlone Town extended its condolences to his family and friends.
