We sent a questionnaire to all 10 candidates running in the Athlone Electoral Area in the forthcoming Roscommon County Council election. The responses are published in print in this week's Westmeath Independent.

NAME: Emer Kelly

ADDRESS: Creeher, Ballyforan, Ballinasloe.

PARTY: Non-Party

SPECIAL AREAS OF INTEREST:

I have particular interests in healthcare, agriculture, housing and planning, roads, and addressing social issues.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING IN THIS ELECTION?

I am contesting the upcoming local election as I believe South Roscommon needs a strong voice to ensure our policies are reflective of the progression and development needed in the local rural area.

I am dedicated to my role as a county councillor for the area and will ensure I work to deliver on key issues in the area.

Since my co-option to the council, I have successfully worked with individuals and communities to develop and generate significant funding for communities and improve local areas, and I believe this is integral to ensure further development.

WHAT ARE THE TWO BIGGEST ISSUES IN YOUR AREA?

There are a number of frequent issues arising on doorsteps in South Roscommon, so to pick two is difficult. Perhaps the most pressing issue currently is Lough Funshinagh. People's homes, farms and mental and physical health have been threatened with the crisis situation that has developed around this area. It is imperative that a timely solution can progress to prevent further loss of homes and farms.

Another key issue is that of speeding on rural roads and through villages. Collaboration between council, Gardaí and communities is required to introduce safety measures on roads.
