Michael O'Brien (Non-Party), Moate

We sent a questionnaire to all 8 candidates running in the Moate Electoral Area in the forthcoming Westmeath County Council election. The responses were published in print in the Westmeath Independent last Wednesday.

NAME: Michael O'Brien

ADDRESS: Cois na hAbhainn, Moate

PARTY: Independent

SPECIAL AREAS OF INTEREST:

Committed to enhancing community facilities, supporting local businesses, and creating new opportunities for economic growth, ensuring a vibrant and thriving local economy. Dedicated to improving public services, such as healthcare and education, while also addressing community concerns on issues like mass immigration, to maintain social harmony and ensure that the needs of all residents are met.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING IN THIS ELECTION?

I'm running in this election because Moate needs a dedicated councillor. For the past five years, Moate and the surrounding areas have been disenfranchised due to the disastrous redrawing of the electoral boundary that removed Moate from the Athlone electoral area. This change has left our community without adequate representation.

I know I have what it takes to be a strong voice for the many people who feel ignored by mainstream political parties.

It's time for Moate to have a councillor who listens and advocates for its residents.

WHAT ARE THE TWO BIGGEST ISSUES IN YOUR AREA?

The big issues in my area are housing shortages and dereliction, lack of ASD units in our local primary schools, and lack of youth amenities. Mass migration concerns and road safety are also paramount in my community.

WHO DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?

While I don't have a singular role model, I draw inspiration from the values instilled by my parents.

TELL US SOMETHING PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I recorded a charity Christmas single in 2017 in aid of Pieta House.
