Gibbons calls for traffic measures to ease concerns at Blyry Industrial Estate

The provision of traffic measures at the entrance to Blyry Industrial Estate has been mooted by Cllr John Gibbons.

The Independent Councillor, speaking at the monthly meeting of Athlone-Moate Municipal District called on the local authority to provide a roundabout or traffic lights at the entrance to the "extremely busy" estate.

"Local business vehicles are delayed entering and leaving the area on a regular basis, particularly at peak times due to the volume of through traffic on the main road which passes the Blyry Industrial Estate entrance," Cllr Gibbons said.

In support of Cllr Gibbons suggestion, Cllr Paul Hogan noted that the main road was a main arterial route into Athlone and gave cause to high levels of traffic usage.

"The installation of small roundabout or a painted yellow box might be considerations at this busy industrial estate entrance," Cllr Hogan said.

Noting the entrance and exit to Blyry Industrial Estate to be "extremely dangerous" given the continuous flow of traffic, Cllr John Dolan afforded his full support to traffic measures being implemented at the location.

District Manager, Willie Ryan noted the significant congestion along the route passing the Blyry Industrial Estate entrance, adding that contractors had been appointed to assess and make relevant alterations to Junction 9 off the N6 bypass.

"This junction, in close proximity to the entrance to Blyry Industrial Estate, is undergoing a 'health check' on the traffic signalling as there are significant congestion concerns. Improvements at Junction 9 will likely positively impact Blyry junction.

"It is therefore intended to address the concerns at Junction 9 as a priority and thereafter reappraise the impact on the congestion concerns at the Blyry entrance," the District Manager said.
