Town Mayor calls for safety measures at Coosan NS pedestrian crossing

A pedestrian crossing at Coosan National School must be made be safe "for all users", Town Mayor, Cllr Frankie Keena, has said.

Cllr Keena raised the motion at a meeting of the Athlone-Moate Municipal District during which he called on the District Engineer, Denis Sloyan, to inspect the traffic management measure in the interest of public safety.

"A number of local residents have informed me that motorists, in the absence of a railing on one side of the pedestrian crossing, are parking adjacent to this traffic management measure. This is highly dangerous as oncoming motorists are unable to see those children behind the parked cars as they are about to cross the road.

"An accident has previously occurred at this crossing where a young child was hit by a car. This is just not good enough so we cannot be procrastinating about addressing this matter, so I am now looking for this pedestrian crossing to be immediately brought up to the necessary safety standards," Cllr Keena said.

In response, the District Engineer stated that he will carry out the necessary inspection of this crossing without delay to identify what works needs to be done to make it safe.
