Athlone GAA takes Green Club Programme to the next level
Athlone GAA has announced that it has been accepted into Phase 3 of the GAA Green Club Programme. This exciting development signifies the club's commitment towards a journey to implement sustainable practices in its operations and promoting environmental responsibility across all aspects of club activities.
The GAA Green Club Programme, established in 2020, provides clubs with the tools and support needed to integrate sustainability into their daily operations. With a focus on five key themes - energy, water, waste, biodiversity, and travel & transport - the programme aims to assist clubs in adopting simple yet effective actions to reduce their environmental footprint. Athlone GAA will be actively involved in a number of green initiatives.
The first green event of 2025 is a gear swap initiative, which encourages the reuse and recycling of sports gear, providing an eco-friendly alternative to purchasing new GAA gear. This will not only reduce waste but also help promote sustainability within the club’s community.
Athlone GAA Green Officer Blaithin Fleming, expressed her enthusiasm about the club’s participation in the Green Club Programme.
“We are delighted to be part of the GAA Green Club Programme. Athlone GAA is on a journey towards sustainability, and this initiative gives us the perfect opportunity to build on the work already being done in our community," she said.
The GAA Green Club Programme is supported by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), the Local Authorities Water Programme (LAWPRO), and the Regional Waste Authorities, and is designed to help clubs achieve tangible sustainability goals.
