Historic Structures funding allocated for South Westmeath buildings

Two projects in South Westmeath have been allocated almost €200,000 in funding under this year's Historic Structures Fund.

Westmeath County Council was allocated €125,510.63 for works on the currently inaccessible railway footbridge in Moate. Such works will include ironworks restoration and the installation of new deck to reinstate public access over the greenway.

Meanwhile, a sum of €68,780.94 has been allocated for works on two adjoining town-centre properties in Athlone at Church Street and Lloyd’s Lane.

Applicant David Keane of Murphy McGerr Architecture Ltd. was awarded the funding for conservation works to two adjoining town-centre properties in Athlone at Church Street and Lloyd’s Lane, including the provision of ‘living-over-the-shop’ accommodation.

Announcing the list of successful projects, Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan, TD, said the funding would protect landmark buildings within their respective communities.

“The works funded will secure the integrity of these sites for the enjoyment of future generations, and enhance the sustainability of local economies with great benefits for employment, tourism, and the environment," the Minister said.

Nationally, over €3.5 million was awarded under the fund for the repair and protection of 28 heritage buildings.
