Fibre broadband service restored to Athlone estate

Residents of the Arcadin housing development in Athlone have had their fibre broadband service restored following an eight day outage.

An email issued to the Westmeath Independent this afternoon (Thursday) confirmed that the service had been restored to the affected residents in the housing development.

Speaking on behalf of himself and other Arcadin residents, Amarta Das said that residents are now seeking an in-depth written report on what caused the fibre broadband service outage.

“We need to find the reasons behind this lengthy service outage which was a source of much frustration for the residents of the 36 homes impacted.

“Based on the information received in the completed written report further opportunities can then be identified and accountability assigned to the relevant authorities,” Mr Das said.

Mr Das commended those who worked to restore the fibre broadband service to the Arcadin residents.

“We would like to thank the field crew and those behind the scenes who have helped with the restoration of this service.

“Having low latency, high quality internet at home is not a luxury, it is a bare minimum necessity and an enabler for working from home professionals, business, education, security and many other services,” Mr Das said.

The Athlone estate had been without a fibre broadband service since March 18, Mr Das stating that the issue was initially reported to the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) and the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) with no clarity as to a resolution date.

“We explored all avenues to ensure our broadband was restored. Thankfully, the issue is now resolved,” Mr Das concluded.
