DVD exploring a walking history of Moate to be launched this evening
A new DVD exploring the history and heritage of Moate will be launched in the town's Tuar Ard Arts Centre this evening (Thursday, March 20) at 7pm.
Entitled 'A Historical Walk Around Moate', the film, the process for which started two years ago, is narrated by Fr Jimmy Murray and includes footage of many of the historical sites in the locality.
Speaking in advance of the DVD launch, Fr Murray said the detailed production covers the period from the arrival of the Normans in the town up until the 1900s.
"The DVD begins with the arrival of the Normans in Moate and the building of the Motte & Bailey in the town," he explained.
"The Quakers arrived in Moate in the 17th century and established a number of industries in the town. As a result, Moate became a wealthy town with a lot of sub industries, such as butchers and bakers, opening in the community.
"The arrival of the railways in the 19th century added further vibrancy as it connected Moate with the rest of the country, enabling visitors to come to Westmeath and view the developing market town," Fr Murray added.
Such periods of history are beautifully captured in the DVD, with additional periods of time referenced in detail during the production which will be available to purchase for €10 during the launch night.
All are welcome to attend the launch event in Tuar Ard this evening, and admission is free of charge.
