Clarke calls for action on worsening homelessness crisis in Westmeath
Sinn Féin TD for Longford-Westmeath, Sorca Clarke, has called for government action on the worsening homelessness crisis in County Westmeath.
"There has been a 17% rise in homelessness in Westmeath in the last year.
“The housing and homelessness crisis in Westmeath continues to worsen under the current government.
“There are 46 properties to rent across the entirety of my constituency, two counties, Longford and Westmeath.
“A very basic two-bedroom property is now well over €1,000 per month. A three-bedroom home is around €2,500 per month. A shed is even being rented out for €270 per week!
“A vital tool in preventing homelessness is the Tenant-in-Situ scheme. A scheme that has been instrumental in preventing homelessness for over 2500 households since April 2023 alone.
“However, the government failed to set targets or funding allocations for 2025. The Department of Housing is also proposing restrictions that would limit access to the scheme, which would have dire consequences for those already struggling.
“Minister O’Brien must recognise the importance of this scheme and refrain from introducing restrictive changes and reduced funding. This will only exacerbate the homeless crisis further.
“Sinn Féin fully supports the social housing Tenant-In-Situ scheme and believe that it is essential to continue operating under the current rules which have proven successful in preventing homelessness.
“The Department of Housing must ensure that the Local Authorities have the necessary staff to process applications in a timely manner.
“In our alternative housing plan we proposed funding 2,000 acquisitions under the scheme in 2025 and 6,500 in total over five years," Deputy Clarke said.
