Troy welcomes extension to 'Rent a Room' measures
Local Fianna Fáil Minister Robert Troy has welcomed an extension to a measure which allows social welfare recipients to rent a room in their own home and have rental income of up to €14,000 disregarded.
First introduced in May 2022, the measure is now to be extended for a further two years in news that was announced this week by Social Protection Minister, Dara Calleary.
This is the second extension of the measure which has been availed of by over 750 people since its introduction. The first extension was announced in March 2023, when the measure was to be kept in place for a further two years.
Minister Troy has welcomed the news of the latest extension, and said the measure provides "a small but valuable contribution in what continues to be a very tight accommodation market".
He added that it reflects Fianna Fáil's commitment in Government to ensure rooms that are available in homes across the country "are freed up for potential tenants".
