Three local projects benefit from €2.1m Greenway funding for Westmeath
A major investment of over €2.1 million in Greenway projects across Westmeath has been announced today (March 5) as part of €67 million in national greenway funding.
Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, Minister of State Seán Canney and Minister of State Jerry Buttimer announced the funding for Greenways and National Roads Active Travel infrastructure through Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
The allocation will also be used to fund approximately 60 Greenway schemes across the country
Locally, the Galway to Athlone Cycleway has received €500,000; The Athlone Castle Cycleway and Public Realm has received €500,000; and the Athlone Cycleway Bridge has received €100,000
Minister Peter Burke Burke said this funding is a significant step forward in making Westmeath a healthier, more connected, and more sustainable place to live.
“Greenways are transformative for communities,” he said.
“They provide safe, scenic spaces for walking and cycling, which is crucial for health and well-being. They also boost local economies, bringing visitors to areas they might not otherwise explore, supporting small businesses, and creating jobs.
“This investment of €2.115 million will ensure key projects across Westmeath continue to progress.”
