Eating disorders need to be taken more seriously in Ireland - Clarke TD

Sinn Féin TD for Longford-Westmeath, Sorca Clarke, says eating disorders need to be taken more seriously in Ireland and has called on the government to take immediate action.

“While the recent announcement of two additional eating disorder teams is a step in the right direction, it is far from enough to meet the urgent needs of people living with eating disorders.

“Early intervention is critical, yet it is still not available in the majority of cases, causing prolonged suffering and relapse to the person with an eating disorder and their loved ones.

“There are still 15 counties across the country without CAMHS or YAMHS eating disorder services, leaving many individuals without adequate support.

“Despite demand, there is a clear shortage of trained staff with the necessary expertise to provide the specialised care that people with eating disorders require.

“People with eating disorders should not have to leave the country to get the care they deserve. This is absolutely shameful and must change.

“People with eating disorders are not untreatable, it is the system that is failing them.

“It is essential that mental health is treated with the same urgency and care as physical health.

“I am now calling on the government to take immediate action," Teachta Clarke said.
