Extra street lighting sought at Drumraney Church

A call for the provision of additional street lighting in the vicinity of Drumraney Church and graveyard was made at the most recent meeting of Athlone-Moate Municipal District.

Cllr Vinny McCormack stated that additional street lighting was necessary as public safety concerns were a major issue at the location.

"The funds are available for the provision of additional lighting in this regard so I'd like to think that this location would be addressed by the council executive in due course," Cllr McCormack said.

His thoughts were echoed by Cllr Tom Farrell who noted that extra lighting at the location would make a "big difference".

"Drumraney church and graveyard is at a dangerous location and from speaking with local community representatives they would appreciate more street lighting there. Hopefully, we can rectify this situation sooner rather than later," Cllr Farrell said.

In response, a council spokesperson stated it was not progressing or financing new public lighting provision until the National Public Lighting Energy Efficiency Project has progressed within Westmeath.

"The surveying of public lighting in Westmeath commenced in August 2024 and remains ongoing, with he first of the light LED retrofitting in the county scheduled to commence later this month," the council spokesperson said.
