Local bishop has new diocesan appointment

Bishop of Elphin Kevin Doran has been appointed by Pope Francis as Bishop of Achonry and Bishop of Elphin.

Bishop Doran was publicly announced as the new Bishop of Achonry during Mass at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Nathy in Ballaghaderreen this morning.

The announcement was made simultaneously in Rome.

The Diocese of Elphin includes local parishes including Ss Peter and Paul's, Athlone; Kiltoom and Cam; Ballyforan, Dysart and Tisrara; Knockcroghery, St John's and Rahara, among others.

The Diocese of Achonry covers 23 parishes in the diocese, located in North Roscommon, South Mayo and parts of Sligo.

Since April 10, 2024, Bishop Doran has been Apostolic Administrator of Achonry, which is a temporary caretaker appointment. Pope Francis has now appointed him Bishop of Achonry.

He remains also Bishop of Elphin, He will be officially installed Bishop of Achonry within the next two months.

The announcement also means that the two dioceses of Achonry and Elphin are joined “in persona episcopi.” or “in the person of the Bishop”. This follows on from the announcement made by the Papal Nuncio last year regarding a 'gradual process of reorganisation' in the Province of Tuam.

Very Reverend Vincent Sherlock, Chancellor of the Diocese of Achonry, explained: "Each Diocese still retains is own unique identity, but gradually over the next few years, while respecting the culture and the history and the unique gifts of each, the two dioceses will become one diocese."
