Gardai investigate report of assault on referee

Gardai are investigating an alleged assault of a referee during a football match in Athlone on Sunday.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that the incident, during which it is alleged the referee was punched, was reported to Athlone Garda station.

The incident occurred during a St Peter's FC v Highfield United Counties Cup match in McCarthy Park, Athlone, which was subsequently abandoned. It’s understood the victim was not physically injured.

In a statement issued by Highfield United on their Facebook page, the Birr-based club stated they found the actions of an individual club member during the fixture to be "completely unacceptable".

"These actions do not reflect the values of our club.

“We are committed to fostering a safe, respectful environment for everyone involved in the sport.

"Immediate steps are being taken to address this situation," the club statement concluded.
