'Dark cloud' as Tullamore man who inspired Athlone Triathlon 12 hour challenge passes
The tragic passing of John McGowan, the proud Tullamore man who inspired Athone Triathlon Club's 12 hour challenge, has cast a dark cloud of mourning over the community in recent days
John was known as a man of great character, who always had a smile and a moment to spare for those who needed him.
His passing comes after a battle with Motor Neurone Disease, which was fought with great dignity.
John passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 8, in the wonderful care of the staff in Esker Rí Nursing Home, Clara, surrounded by his loving family.
He is predeceased by his parents Bernie and Maureen, and will be sadly missed by his loving family Paul, Karen and Maureen, wife Lynda, his adored grandchildren, brothers Tom, Brian and Aiden, sisters Anne and Dympna, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A statement of condolence by the Tulllamore Harriers chairman, Adrian Curley, read: “A dark cloud hangs over the Tullamore Harriers Club, having received the very sad news that one of the club’s favourite sons, John McGowan, has gone to his eternal reward.
“The love affair between John and the Tullamore Harriers Club started in the late 60’s, when a young 12 year old boy wandered into the old clubhouse in Offaly Street.
“John was ever willing to help and support the club’s efforts. When the call went out for help, John was the first to raise his hand, and always with a smile on his face and a glint in his eye.
“John was a cherished club mate and friend to all the members of Tullamore Harriers. The bravery and dignity shown by John in the face of his diagnosis with MND ,was nothing short of astonishing. He has now slipped the shackles of this terrible illness and is a free spirit once more. We shall cherish the memories of the time we spent together.”
Over 100 people took part in the Athlone Triathlon Club's 12 hour challenge last Sunday, February 2, to raise funds for Athlone Family Resource Centre and Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
The event raised over €40,000 for the worthy causes, with John's daughter and club secretary, Maureen, taking part in honour of her beloved father.
John will be reposing at O'Reilly's Funeral Home, Harbour Street, Tullamore, on Monday from 6pm until Rosary at 8pm. Removal to the Church of the Assumption, Tullamore, will take place on Tuesday morning, arriving for Funeral Mass at 10am.
