'We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to domestic abuse' - Clarke
An Garda Síochána received over 4,000 domestic abuse calls in the Meath/Westmeath Division last year, an increase of 16 per cent on the previous twelve months.
New figures published in response to a recent Parliamentary Question tabled by Longford-Westmeath TD Sorca Clarke have revealed that in 2024 local gardaí received 4,035 domestic abuse calls. In 2023, the figure in the Meath/Westmeath Division was 3,479.
Nationally, An Garda Síochána received over 65,000 domestic abuse calls, a year on year increase of 8.3%.
Deputy Clarke says that “we cannot continue to turn a blind eye to this issue”.
“This is a very serious matter and should be treated as such. More and more individuals, women in particular, are now having to choose between homelessness and a place that is no longer safe.
“Women’s Aid say that at least one in four women in Ireland are subjected to some form of abuse from a current or former partner.
“In the last two decades alone, 177 women have been killed in their own homes.
“This is not just a ‘private matter’ but a public health issue that requires a multifaceted approach to reduce its prevalence and ensure that every individual who makes that phone call receives the support they deserve.
“This must be a top priority for the incoming government.
“Let us not forget all the brave women who have come forward, not just in Ireland but all around the world.
“As Giséle Pélicot said recently during her trial in France ‘Shame must change sides’.
“Please remember help is available."
