Boxer delivers provisions by boat to marooned family

Business owners who were marooned by the impact of the storm have paid tribute to Deputy Kevin 'Boxer' Moran and the local community for their efforts.

Owen Egan and Helen Conneely operate the Carnakilla Lakeshore Retreat at Portlick, Glasson. Storm Éowyn on Friday resulted in trees blocking the roadway to Glasson, leaving them cut off on the Portlick headland of Lough Ree.

Owen Egan contacted 'Boxer', who had helped the family when they were hit by significant flooding previously.

He explained that 'Boxer' felt that the level of work required to clear the roadway might leave the family without provisions for a few days.

“He organised Blair Chatterton and other help including himself to bring us food supplies and water by boat on Saturday evening," Helen said.

“Blair’s mum sent cakes and tarts. The lake was rough and it wasn’t a simple job. It was the only way in to us."

“We really appreciate his and their kindness," she said. "It’s typical of his approach to solving and helping people rather than talking."

"We are hoping in the coming years - should he get junior minister at OPW that there will be a follow up to the work he started on flood mitigation and flood controls."

She said that since then kind neighbours had opened an emergency route into Glasson for people cut off in Portlick.
