The scale of the challenge is shown by this map of outages locally, at 4.45pm, Friday.

Some 9,000 homes and businesses without power in region

Some 9,000 homes and businesses in the Athlone and Moate areas remained without power this evening, Friday.

Storm Éowyn has passed through the region, leaving significant damage, and causing major disruption.

The biggest legacy of the storm is power outages across the region - including large parts of urban Athlone and Moate.

Some 6,300 customers are without power this evening in the wider Athlone area, including some of the Coosan, Kiltoom, and Athlone east urban section.

In Moate, there is similar disruption, with up to 2,500 customers without power there, including the Knockdomney and Clara Road areas.

ESB Networks has said that it could take over a week to get every area back on the grid, stating that the damage caused by the storm is "unprecedented". However, remote rural areas are likely to be those waiting the longest.

Already, faults at the Monksland sub station in Athlone were remedied today, bringing power back to considerable numbers served by that vital piece of infrastructure.
