Extension of Griffith Street road closure announced
An extension to the road closure on Griffith Street has been announced as part of the ongoing Athlone Main Drainage Project.
The works on Griffith Street will be further extended until Friday, February 21, to allow for completion of the shaft following tunnelling works along The Strand.
Both pedestrian and emergency access will be maintained on both closures throughout the works.
The previous timeline for the works would have seen them completed on Friday, January 31.
It is just one of a series of closure in the town centre over the coming weeks, with the recent announcement that The Quay would be closed to public traffic from Monday next, January 27, until May 16.
The Athlone Main Drainage Scheme, one of Uisce Éireann's largest projects to date, is a €114 million overhaul of the town's wastewater infrastructure.
The project involves the construction of new pumping stations at Golden Island and Coosan West, and almost 3km of new sewers.
