Diversions announced ahead of three-month closure of The Quay

Further details regarding the three-month closure of The Quay in Athlone have been announced.

The closure of the street between Sean’s Bar and Saint Peter’s Port junction will be closed from this coming Monday, January 27 to Friday, May 16.

New details reveal the closure is due to the council receiving the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), the cross connection between the existing and new sewer network, and the fit-out of the permanent shaft as part of the forthcoming tunnelling works for the Upper Shannon Crossing.

An alternative route from Main Street (L-4019) to Saint Peter's Port (L-8014) is to be signposted as in the above map.

The Athlone Main Drainage Scheme, one of Uisce Éireann's largest projects to date, is a €114 million overhaul of the town's wastewater infrastructure.

The project involves the construction of new pumping stations at Golden Island and Coosan West, and almost 3km of new sewers.
