Athlone-based judge pays tribute to "stalwart friend" and fellow judge who died suddenly

The sitting judge at Athlone District Court, Bernadette Owens, today paid a warm tribute to her "stalwart friend" and fellow judge, Marie Quirke, who died suddenly this week.

The weekly sitting of Athlone District Court this morning (Wednesday) began with a minute's silence to mark the sudden passing of Judge Quirke at her home in Meath yesterday.

Judge Owens spoke about the sense of loss she felt upon hearing the news.

She outlined how Judge Quirke had been appointed to the district court in 2012 and was assigned to the Dublin metropolitan area. She went on to make "a huge contribution" during her years in the judiciary.

"She was held in the highest esteem by her district court colleagues, the courts service staff, and those who came before her," said Judge Owens.

She added that Judge Quirke brought an "unparalleled intellect" to her work, as well as an innate sense of humanity.

"On a personal level, she was a stalwart friend with a wicked sense of humour and was great fun to be around," she said. "I feel a huge sense of loss. She was always at the other end of the phone to provide advice and a listening ear."

Judge Owens also spoke about her late colleague's role as president of the District Court Judges' Association, and expressed her sympathy to Judge Quirke's husband Alan, daughter Dearbhla, and son Tiernan.

Judge Owens' comments were followed by expressions of sympathy to the late Judge Quirke's family and friends on behalf of the courts service staff and Gardai.

Athlone solicitor Mark Cooney also extended his condolences on behalf of the legal practitioners, saying he had known Judge Quirke for some time and was "absolutely shocked" to hear about her passing.
