Three-month Athlone road closure announced

The latest town centre road closure arising from the ongoing Athlone Main Drainage Project will come into effect next week and remain in place for more than three months.

Westmeath County Council stated that The Quay (South), on the left bank of the River Shannon in Athlone (L-8015) would be closed to public traffic from Monday next, January 27, until May 16.

The local authority said the road closure would be in effect for 24 hours a day, during the aforementioned dates, and that it was necessary to "facilitate works for the Athlone Main Drainage Project."

An alternative route from Main Street (L-4019) to Saint Peter's Port (L-8014) is to be signposted.

The Athlone Main Drainage Scheme, one of Uisce Éireann's largest projects to date, is a €114 million overhaul of the town's wastewater infrastructure.

The project involves the construction of new pumping stations at Golden Island and Coosan West, and almost 3km of new sewers.
