Nine local projects share in €588k in Active Travel funding for 2025
Nine local projects have been allocated a share in €588,000 in funding from the Active Travel Scheme 2025.
The funding, which was announced on Monday, January 13, saw both Westmeath County Council and Roscommon County Council included in almost €3 million allocated nationwide.
One of the key aims cited is to increase the number of walking and cycling networks so that walking, cycling and public transport will account for 50% of all journeys made by 2030.
Projects under the scheme include the development of segregated cycle lanes and widened footpaths, new walking and cycling bridges, and new pedestrian crossings.
The nine project receiving funding locally include five on the east side of the town, and four on the westside of the town.
On the eastside, project include the Creggan to Town Centre Active Travel Scheme, allocated €15,000; the Garycastle to Town Centre Active Travel Scheme, allocated €120,000; the Cornamaddy to Garycastle Active Travel Scheme, allocated €80,000; the Cornamaddy to Town Centre Active Travel Scheme, allocated €121,000; and the Coosan NS to Town Centre Active Travel Scheme, allocated €157,000.
On the westside, project include the Pedestrian/Cycle Bridge to Baylough Active Travel Scheme, allocated €15,000; Bealnamulla Active Travel Scheme, allocated €60,000; Colaiste Chiarain Summerhill, allocated €5,000; and the Old Galway Road Active Travel Pedestrian & Cycling Route, allocated €15,000.
