Some schools are shut this morning, while others are opening later than usual.

Four housand people in Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary are facing into the cold for their fourth day without power.

Dangerous travelling conditions are being reported with many roads and footpaths resembling ice rinks while freezing fog is lingering.

The current orange alert for low temperatures and ice remains in place for most of the country until 10sm this morning when the less severe yellow one will kick back in.

Then another orange alert comes into effect at 6pm this evening until 11am tomorrow.

Met Éireann has also extended the yellow alert until midday on Friday.

Met Éireann's Rebecca Cantwell told Newstalk: "We're expecting a lot of black ice around, so we're urging people to really slow down, take care.

"Plan ahead and plan for extra time for your journey, just take it easy on the roads out there this morning, they can be treacherous."
