Tributes paid to Westmeath native who died in road tragedy
David Bracken, a local man in his 30s who died tragically in a single-vehicle collision just a few days before Christmas, was remembered at his funeral Mass today (Friday) as "a good friend to everyone".
Originally from Westmeath but residing in Ballycumber, Mr Bracken died in a collision that took place at Moorock, Ballycumber, during the early hours of Sunday morning, December 22.
At his funeral Mass in Corpus Christi Church, Mount Temple, Fr Reji Kurian spoke of the sense of shock and sadness locally since news of the tragic accident emerged.
"Today is a sad occasion. David died at such a young age, so unexpectedly," said the priest.
He said many would wonder why something this had happened, and there was no satisfactory answer anybody could give to that question.
"But whatever you are feeling today, let me advise you to take it to God. God is big enough to handle your pain, and even your anger," he told mourners.
The priest described David Bracken as "a unique character" who was a good son, grandson, boyfriend, nephew, cousin and friend.
He had attended national school in Cornamaddy and Mount Temple before going to secondary school in Moate. He then went to work in his family's automotive business in Ballycumber.
Fr Reji spoke of how David Bracken became interested in cars at a young age and this would become his "number one passion" in life.
He was also involved in sports, playing with Caulry GAA and with Buccaneers and Midland Warriors rugby teams.
On social media, Midland Warriors paid tribute to him, writing: "The club was saddened and shocked to hear of the tragic passing of our former youth player David (Pops) Bracken.
"David was part of the club's first ever youths team. Condolences to all David's family and friends. RIP."
David Bracken is sadly missed by his heartbroken parents, David and Eimear, girlfriend Ciara, grandparents, uncles, aunt, relatives and many friends.
He reposed at his parents' home in Moate before removal this morning to Corpus Christi Church, Mount Temple, for the funeral Mass. Burial took place afterwards in Coosan cemetery, Athlone.
