St Mary's NS elects new Junior Mayor
St Mary's NS is participating in the Arcadia Climate Action Awards (ACCA) again this year. The main objective of the Junior Mayor initiative is to give young people a voice and to inform students about the importance of democracy and the workings of local government.
The programme encourages the elected representative in each school to feed back information to the council around issues such as littering and problems involving a financial or engineering solution.
Representatives are also encouraged to talk about gender and equality in Local Government and the importance of young people voting after they reach eighteen years of age.
Ishan Sachin was elected St. Mary's Primary School Junior Mayor for 2024/2025 .
Ishan wrote an excellent speech that won the votes of his fellow 6th Class pupils.
Ishan will be working with the Student Council this year to ensure that he leaves St. Mary’s a more climate conscious and sustainable school than it already is!
Meanwhile, St Mary's Primary School welcomed a very special guest recently - Benny The Blue!
Benny is the club mascot for Athlone GAA, who have generously donated two sets of goalposts, dozens of footballs and other training equipment to St Mary's Primary School.
It is the nearest sports club to St Mary's and we hope that the generous donations will encourage many new sport stars of the future! Pupils currently enjoy weekly GAA coaching and this equipment will serve to enhance their training sessions.
Many thanks to the club chairperson Fiachra McLoughlin for arranging the donation. St. Mary's are hoping for a long and successful partnership between Athlone GAA and the school.
