November temperatures break records in Westmeath

November saw the highest temperature on record in Westmeath in three decades, with a high of 17.7 degrees Celcius recorded at the Mullingar weather station on Wednesday, November 6.

The previous record for Westmeath was 17.3°C, recorded in November 1990. Records for Westmeath temperatures go back 74 years.

Nationwide, eleven stations reported their highest maximum temperature on record for the month on November 6, including Mount Dillon in Roscommon, which had a high of 18.8°C, up from their previous record of 16.8°C in 2022. The highest temperature was recorded in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, which hit 19.2°C.

The average national temperature for November 2024 (using the Island of Ireland dataset*) was 8.95 °C, which is 0.99°C above the most recent 1991-2020 long-term average (LTA) and 1.89 °C above the 1961-1990 LTA. November 2024 was the tenth warmest November on record since 1900.

The warmest November on record was in 1994 with an average temperature of 10.1 °C and the coldest November was in 1919 with an average temperature of 3.90 °C.

November 2024 was a month of contrasts weatherwise. While it started mild, the third week brought frost and snow, while Storm Bert in the fourth week brought strong winds and precipitation, particularly on the west coast.

The month closed with milder weather again, but with heavy fog in many parts of Westmeath and Roscommon. It was also a dull month nationwide, with sunshine levels ranging from 58% to 80% lower than average.
