Final tally in for Roscommon Galway

All of the 124 boxes for the Roscommon Galway have now been opened, with the final tally of fist preference votes showing three clear leaders in this three-seater constituency.

Topping the poll is Micheal Fitzmaurice of Independent Ireland at 11,847, who before election day was widely predicted to retain his seat. With an estimated quota of 10,156 for election, Fitzmaurice is likely to get elected on the first count.

Running second and third are sitting TD Claire Kerrane of Sinn Féin at 7,930, and Martin Daly, Fianna Fáil at 7,252, a first-time candidate.

Outgoing Senator Eugene Murphy, who left Fianna Fáil to run as an Independent in the election after the party took a single-seat ticket approach to the constituency, has conceded defeat and acknowledged that he “doesn't have the numbers” to catch up with Daly or Kerrane. He plans to run for nomination to the Seanad again.
