Following the sentencing of a 38-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man for violent burglaries which targeted pensioners in Athlone, Gardai have appealed to any other victims of similar incidents to make contact with them.
Detective Superintendent David Nolan of the Meath Westmeath Garda Division issued a statement at the steps of Mullingar Circuit Court after sentencing in the case yesterday (Tuesday).
Precious Moyo (38) of the Athlone Accommodation Center, Lissywollen, and Yamen Alhamada (20) of Warren Grove, Boyle, Roscommon were jailed for eight and six years respectively for shocking burglary and aggravated burglary offences in the Athlone area between June and September of last year.
"An Garda Siochana notes the convictions and sentences imposed in Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court. I want to pay tribute to my colleagues in the Garda investigation who carried out this investigation dilligently and professionally," stated Detective Superintendent Nolan.
"The thoughts of the investigation team, and every member of An Garda Siochana, are very much with the victims of these wicked crimes.
"These crimes were committed under the pretence of being present to help and care for the victims," he added.
"Crimes of this nature prey on the potential vulnerabilities of individuals; these crimes are more reprehensible as they have taken place in the victim's homes, a space where everybody should be safe and feel safe, and have left a lasting detrimental impact on their victims.
"A Garda Siochana appeals to any person who suspects they may be a victim of similar crimes to raise their concerns with a loved one, a friend, a neighbour, or a trusted person.
"We appeal to any person who suspects they know a person who may be a victim of abuse by another, whatever that may be, to raise their concern. That victim may not be in a position to speak for themselves.
"An Garda Siochana will take these concerns seriously, we will help and we will support you," concluded the statement read by Detective Superintendent Nolan.
