Athlone coaches nominated for Westmeath LGFA awards
Three Athlone GAA coaches have been shortlisted in the 2024 Westmeath LGFA Volunteer of the Year Awards, which take place on Friday evening.
John O’Brien, Kieran Donlon and Sive O’Brien have all earned nominations for their exceptional contributions to the club and to ladies’ football in Westmeath.
Father-and-daughter duo John and Sive O’Brien have been nominated in two separate categories: John for Club Coach of the Year and Sive for Young Volunteer of the Year.
John O’Brien coaches the U12 girls’ team and is the visionary behind the All Stars Programme at Athlone GAA. This programme provides children with additional needs the opportunity to play GAA in a supportive environment tailored to their pace and abilities.
Sive O’Brien assists with coaching the U10 girls and is an active coach in the All Stars Programme, following in her father’s footsteps with enthusiasm and dedication.
Kieran Donlon, nominated for his work with the U14 girls, led his team along with his fellow coaches to a Division 1 final for this age group - losing out by a single point to Mullingar Shamrocks.
“Having three of our coaches nominated for the Westmeath LGFA Volunteer of the Year Awards is a testament to the dedication and passion they bring to their roles,” said Fiachra McLoughlin, Chairman of Athlone GAA.
“We are very proud of all three nominees and the positive impact they have on our players and community in Athlone GAA.”
The Westmeath LGFA Volunteer Awards ceremony will take place in the Village Barn, Tyrrellspass this Friday, November 22 at 7.30pm.
