Call for another speed ramp on Athlone's Assumption Road
A call for an another speed ramp to be installed at Assumption Road in Athlone was made by Cllr Paul Hogan at last month's meeting of the Athlone Moate Municipal District.
Cllr Hogan submitted a written question which asked council management to "provide monies for an additional speed ramp" in the long-established residential area.
However, the response from council management was less than enthusiastic about the proposal, pointing out that the road had two ramps and a tabletop ramp already installed on it.
"The road is residential and not generally used by commuting traffic," stated the council management's response.
"The district notes that the traffic flows associated with nearby Main Drainage works on Abbey Road are increasing through traffic (on Assumption Road) at present.
"The need for additional ramps will lessen when the works in Abbey Road conclude in the coming months."
Despite these reservations about the idea of adding another ramp, local authority management agreed to "inspect the area and consider the provision of suitable additional measures to reduce speed, if merited."
It said that, if further speed reduction measures were deemed necessary, this would be considered as part of next year's roads programme in the local district.
