People Before Profit announce Longford-Westmeath candidate
People Before Profit have nominated their candidates in the Longford-Westmeath constituency for the upcoming election.
Dave Smyth has been selected as the People Before Profit candidate for the Longford/Westmeath constituency.
Smyth also stood for the party in the recent local elections in Longford, but was not elected.
At that time, his occupation was listed as broadcast journalist, and his candidate biography notes stated that he had “been a political activist for over thirty years and a member of PBP for over eight years, campaigning on and supporting many pertinent issues such as housing for all, marriage equality, abolition of water charges, proper public healthcare, Repeal of the 8th amendment, anti-war movements and so much more.”
Ballinasloe native Andrew Mannion was also recently announced as the People Before Profit candidate for Roscommon-Galway.
On Wednesday, October 30, People Before Profit announced that they will have candidates in 41 of the 43 constituencies for the upcoming general election.
In a press release, the party said “This demonstrates our commitment to offering voters a left alternative to end 100 years of FIanna Fáil and Fine Gael rule in this country.
“Our candidates will show that another Ireland is possible. An Ireland in which we invest the wealth in public services - an NHS, free childcare and truly free education. We commit to abolish the USC and tax millionaires instead to invest in services for those with additional needs and disabilities.
The housing crisis will be central to our election campaign. We commit to bringing in rent controls to reduce rents and to ban evictions. We would use the Apple tax to capitalise a state construction company to directly build at least 35,000 social and affordable homes per year - homes that are urgently needed.
“Our campaign will also commit to climate actions that will improve people’s lives, including free frequent public transport, and actions to ensure there will be no more data centres or LNG. People Before Profit will continue to give real solidarity to Palestine, not just the words offered by the government parties, and we will be unflinching in defending immigrants and standing against racism.
“While other opposition parties are still refusing to rule out future coalition deals with Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael, People Before Profit-Solidarity guarantee not to prop them up. Instead we are giving the Irish people a clear choice and a genuine left alternative in the forthcoming general election.
“Another Ireland is possible.”
