Playoff details confirmed as Athlone Town face Wexford in first leg on Thursday

Athlone Town's bid to return to the Premier Division of the League of Ireland begins at home this Thursday, October 24, against Wexford FC (kick-off 7.45pm).

The club's men's team finished fourth in the First Division this season, just a point behind Wexford, and the sides will now meet over two legs in the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division Playoff Semi-Finals.

Following the game on Thursday, Athlone will make the trip to the South-East for the second leg in Ferrycarrig Park at 3pm on this coming Bank Holiday Monday (October 28).

If the Town can secure victory against Wexford they would then face the winner of the other First Division playoff semi-final, between UCD and Bray Wanderers, at 4pm on Saturday, November 2, in Dalymount Park.

The First Division team which emerges from the semi finals and final will then play FAI Cup finalists Drogheda United in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division Promotion / Relegation Play-Off.

The one-off decider will be played at 2pm on Saturday, November 16, at a venue still to be decided. The game will be shown live on Virgin Media Two.

Six days prior to the play-off, Drogheda will face Derry City in the FAI Cup final at the Aviva Stadium (Sunday, November 10).
